Cocktail in the Rocks

Bored of serving your drinks on the rocks? Why not try in the rocks? This cocktail sphere will certainly surprise everyone. A hollow ice sphere is filled with the desired cocktail and drinkers get to smash it open at the table. Great presentation and a lot of fun!

This fantastic presentation adds a new dimension to your favorite cocktail. To release the cocktail in the glass, just break the hollow ice sphere using a small hammer and enjoy. Be careful not to hit the glass and break it too!  You can also use a muddler for this purpose.

At some mixology bars, the hollow ice sphere is made using an expensive cold immersion circulator but in this post we explain you how to obtain similar results with The Original Whiskey Ball and a regular freezer. The advantage of using an immersion circulator is that it is a lot faster and it is easier to obtain a hollow sphere with consistent ice wall thickness.

Ice ball cocktail tools
  1. The Original Whiskey Ball ice sphere mold
  2. Large syringe with needle (buy one on Amazon)
  3. Freezer

Cocktail ingredients (or your favorite cocktail)
  1. 1 ½ oz grapefruit vodka
  2. ¾ oz Aperol
  3. 1 oz lemon juice
  4. 1 oz orange juice
  5. ½ oz honey syrup
  6. 1 orange peel twist for garnish

Preparing the Ice Ball Shell

Picture
  1. Fill The Whiskey Ball to the fill line using distilled water
  2. Place in the coldest part of the freezer.  For most upright freezer it's the top shelf
  3. Freeze for about 2-3 hours.  This may take a few tries as each freezer is different.  The goal is to create a 1/4" wall
  4. Remove top part of the Whiskey Ball mold, puncture a small hole, and turn upside down to empty out unfrozen water.  Use a syringe to suck out water if needed.
  5. Release the ice ball from the base into the top part of the mold.  Use the top part of the mold to cradle the ice sphere while it is stored in the freezer.

Serving the Cocktail in the Rocks

  1. Mix cocktail shaken with ice so that the beverage is very cold.  Otherwise it will crack the ice.
  2. Suck up cocktail with syringe
  3. Inject cocktail into the ice balls existing hole or create new one
  4. Put your spoon into the cup
  5. Drop the ice ball into the spoon
  6. Lower the ice ball gently into your cup
